Suppressing pain is not healing. It’s hiding, it’s avoidance, and the opposite of healing and freedom!
I had a conversation a few weeks ago, and a comment came about regarding how the generations before us handled their stress and circumstances differently compared to today. It was said that they just seemed to get over it – basically, they just kept it moving. Yes, those before us indeed persevered. But for days to follow, my mind could not stop pondering, was “just getting over it” healthy, though? It is a hard ‘no’ for me.
I later reflected on how the decisions of those before me may have shown up in my life today. Furthermore, how they reacted to them. I believe some of what I was privy to growing up significantly contributed to my not-so-favorable relational habits and seasons of settling.
We often do not realize why we go about life in the ways we do. Especially ways we are not too pleased with and perhaps wondering why we cannot get out of the perpetual cycle. All the while, not knowing we have likely adapted to a transgenerational pattern.
Granted, back then, mental health awareness and therapy were not as normalized or accessible as it is today. Thus, suppression was likely a default but unhealthy nevertheless. As we are in a time when therapy and counseling are widely available, I encourage you to unmask and address your pain head-on, friend. Let suppression be a thing of the past. If not for yourself, do it for those connected to you and the legacy that will follow you. You never know how the decisions of today will impact the next generation.
There is FREEDOM in Christ to break free from transgenerational cycles and patterns and be a generational pattern breaker!
